Outputting to TV

Well basically i've got an LCD monitor and a TV connected to my geforce graphics card...

what i want to do is play avi files and other media on the TV...

don't mind how it's done as long as the outcome is that i can play them on it.

i've tried configuring for dual head in fedora's system config but every setting i've tried seems to make X not be able to start.

has anyone got any ideas?

i'm running Fedora Core 4

if you're using xorg for X then look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf for a line that says --

Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"

put a # in front of it to comment it out save the file and restart X If it worked great, if not there is a lot of info in the nvidia docs and I think if you search for it a howto on this site

Good luck,

i think that might be the underlying problem... i haven't yet installed the nvidia drivers.

i had a problem trying to install them... and this is probably a question for the newb forum but hopefully you won't hold this against me.

how do you boot up linux so that X isn't started coz i can't install the drivers while X is running but i can't find a way to stop X so i can do it!!!

it was v.annoying and after a couple of hours i gave up!

Just boot up normally then press Ctrl-Alt-F1. This should put you in text mode. Login as root then enter the command telinit 3. It should run for a few seconds and give a prompt again(if it seems to stop with no prompt just hit enter and you should get one). Now that your xserver is shutdown do your install of the nvidia drivers. Once it is finished make sure your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or the XF86Config-4 if I remember the filename right) has nvidia listed as the driver instead of nv. You also want to make sure that these lines are like shown below --

# Load "GLcore"
# Load "dri"
Load "glx"

save the file then enter the command telinit 5. If all went well you will probably see an nvidia logo then your login screen. If it doesn't work the Ctrl-Alt-F1 again edit the xorg.conf file again changing nvidia back to nv. Then restart your xserver and look up the very good Nvidia install howto that is on this site.

i was going nuts a couple of weeks ago trying to set this up; dual head this, dual head that, nothing worked. finally, i grabbed tv-out for nvidia off sourceforge.net, and it worked almost like a charm from the get go:

i can't post urls just yet but it's

sourceforge(dot)net/projects/nv-tv-out

cheers

sorry meant to say this...

Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"

that line does not appear in the xorg.conf i'll try looking for some nvidia docs...

i couldn't find any howto's on here... i looked under tutorials but to no avail.

unfortunately i don't think the search can pick up 2 letter words i.e. TV so i won't find anything that way either.

i was kinda hoping it would have it's own desktop so i can do other things on the standard monitor while watching my movies and stuff on the TV...

i'm sure i'll find something in the nvidia doc's and i'll post back here when i eventually make it work.
