"outp does not work and gives segmentation fault

I am running Linux 7.2 Redhat and always when I attempt to utilize the "outp" function it gives me a segmentation fault. For example the code

outp(0xFF, 0x3F8) to write an 0xFF to serial port #1 gives me a segmentation fault. What am I doing wrong here? Thank you very much for all of your time and assistance!

Eric.
