on & off printing with HP Laserjet 1020

I have 2 partitions: XP & Ubuntu 7. Regularly, I will try to print something in Ubuntu and nothing happens. When I check Administration/Printing I see my HP Laserjet 1020 installed and ready. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling without success. What works every time is closing Ubuntu, opening XP, printing something there, closing XP, opening Ubuntu and then I have access to my printer and it works fine. Help. Thanks.

I've just started on installing the HP LaserJet 1020 on linux, so I'm no expert. However, some other sites said that the printer needs its firmware loaded from the computer every time you turn on the printer. That would explain why it works from linux AFTER you run it from Windows.
