Hi Everyone!
I'm hoping someone can explain what happened. On Sunday I reinstalled Mandrake 9.1. Yesterday morning I began working to get my usb scanner up and running again. It was working fine before I decided to wipe everything out and reinstall. I had to leave for work before the task was completed. I went back to the task at lunch and before lunch was over, xsane had opened and I was able to scan a document. Everything appeared fine. I went back to work. Sometime yesterday evening, I was going to scan another document. (System had been running without interuption since Sunday.) Xsane didn't open but instead, showed an error message saying it was "unable to locate device". Sane-find-scanner, did not find a scanner. Scanimage -L did not find a scanner. I went to /dev/usb/ and discovered scanner0 was gone. What happened? Please keep in mind that it was working several hours earlier. Sane-find-scanner had earlier found a usb scanner located at /dev/usb/scanner0. Scanimage -L had detected the scanner, as well. In fact the scanner had actually completed a scan using xsane. Hope you have some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Are all the cables/connections secure? This is unlikely to be the cause, but it's one of those things that sometimes is so basic it can be overlooked. If you've got a cat, they sometimes seem endlessly fascinated by things that look like string. -- J.W.
I want to thank Arnold and J.W. for your assistance. I was hoping after getting rid of Bill strange, unexplainable things would stop happening. Last night, out of frustration, I rebooted. After everything was up I double-clicked on xsane and it worked as well as anyone could ask. I checked further and "scanner0" was back in /dev/usb/ where it belongs. I don't know!!!! I was used to things like this as one of Bill's customers but I was hoping to get away from that stuff.
Thanks again, guys!
