not booting after kernel recompiling - SATA

Hi,
I'm running Debian Etch
I've recompiled the kernel (2.6.21.5) and included real-time.
As a basis I used .config from the standard Debian Etch 2.6.18.4 kernel, which worked fine on my computer, just added the real-time patch and changed the real-time parameters. I didn't change anything else.

My hard drive is a Maxtor SATA drive, I read that there may be some problems with installing linux on it (and I couldn't install Studio64 on it - it wasn't recognised), however, Debian etch installation went smoothly.

So I recompiled the kernel and used 2.6.21.5 but I can't boot into it.
At some point at the boot up I got:

Quote:
begin: Waiting for root file system...
and it just stops and 'thinks'

any ideas, please

Thanks, after recompiling with the CONFIG_SATA_SIL option, it was the same,
but I got automatic update for the new kernel image and headers, and then it
went a bit further, however, each time stopping at some point. eg.
-ACPI
- populating /proc or /dev (don't remember)
- and others

So there are some other issues as well,
well I'll have to read on it more
regards
s.
