Post No Sound, Integrated Audio detected - SuSE 9.3

I am running SUSE Linux Pro 9.3 on a Dell Dimension 2400 with integrated SoundMax Audio from Analog Devices. Basically, I have no sound.

The sound card is detected as an Intel AC'97 82801 DB/ICH4 audio device by using lspci and YaST. This sounds correct. I am running kernel 2.6.12 with integrated ALSA support, so that shouldnt be a problem...

Things I have tried:

1) Setting all KMIX volumes to high.
2) Setting all ALSAmixer volumes to high. Note: several outputs, such as External Amp are unmuted, but will not respond when I try to change the volume.
3) Ran ALSAconf
4) I tried reinstalling the card through YaST but it says that the module snd-i810audio is missing (or something like that). It does that for pretty much any module i try to install for the audio driver. HOw do I add more modules?
5) Installing new kernel as I post this...

At one point today, I actually heard a sound. It was a system notification sound. I dont know what happened, but it doesnt work anymore .

Thank you,
Jeff

Go to Kcontrol center --->>> Sound & multimedia ----> Sound system

There disable the sound system.

Now take any mp3. Type

$> mpg321 filename
or
$> mpg123 filename

Playing MPEG stream from test.mp3 ...
Junk at the beginning 49443303
MPEG 1.0 layer III, 128 kbit/s, 44100 Hz joint-stereo
No sound.

Here is an interesting thing: whenever I plug my speakers in and pop the out, there is customary popping and crackling. When I plug them into the microphone jack I hear popping, but no sound.

I really am wondering about the error where it cannot find the sound modules during yast configuration...

I got fed up, and a reinstall fixed it. It also could have helped that I installed every ALSA package I could find.
