Newbie qn: PCMCIA controller install - resource conflict?

I'm trying to do an FTP install of Suse 9.1 on my Compaq Armada 1592DT, but the install hangs at 'loading data into ramdisk (54587kb)'. I've checked the logs of the FTP server, and the installer appears to manage to establish a connection.
I've traced this to what I think is the root of the problem, the installation of the Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controller or the Xircom RealPort Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 (REM56G-100). Using the manual install I can load the PCMCIA modules which appear to start OK, but the card gives a high and low beep which indicates an error.
Looking through the consoles I can see cardmgr gives the error:
cardmgr[695] open_sock(socket 0) failed: Device or resource busy
If I try to pass an irq_list parameter to insmod yenta_socket module manually, it says
insmod: Error inserting '/modules/yenta_socket.ko': -1 unknown symbol in module
Suggestions?
Cheers,
Aled
