Newbie needs a modem recommedation for Mandrake 9.1 distribution

I am a newbie who installed Mandrake 9.1 on my Dell Diminsion Desktop PC. The installation was about 99% correct except for the fact that it did not / could not detect my internal modem (BCM V.90 56K). I tried a few things last night that "linman" recommended but I got hung up on [step 6]. Therefore, I was just thinking about getting a new modem that is compatible with Linux Mandrake.

My "uname -r" command returns this information:
2.4.21-0.13mdk

Thanks for your help in advance.

Any external serial modem will work on any Linux distribution.

you probably have a winmodem, check www.linmodem.org.

(It may tell you to disable PnP in BIOS, and use ./scanModem utility to detect your modem and tell if you can get free drivers, buy drivers or get another modem)

Any hardware modem work fine. Some software modem work fine, too.
