New to Linux, sound doesn't work.

First off, I read the FAQ thing that was pinned. Doing everything it says there, hence the weird look of this question.

Here's the readout of /sbin/lspci:

root@0[root]# /sbin/lspci
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS 645xx (rev 51)
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0003
0000:00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS963 [MuTIOL Media IO] (rev 25)
0000:00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE]
0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)
0000:00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
0000:00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
0000:00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller
0000:00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 91)
0000:00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX (rev 20)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600] (rev a1)

I'm using Knoppix 3.4 with Kernel 2.4.26.

Don't have any logs, but here's the message I get when I try to run an mp3:

Please check that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard

I tried googling for an answer, but I only found a load of questions similar but very different. Often specific questions and answers which don't help me since I'm a complete newbie.

Okay, well, that's all the FAQ that seemed the pertain to me.
I installed Linux only recently (few days ago), and I this is my second time. I think last time I asked a friend of mine and he sorted it out for me, but I don't see him anymore, so that won't work.

I'd appreciate any help. If there's anything I've forgotten, tell me what and I'll try to find the answer. :P

Thanks!

i would try it. i'm sure you have to have the kernel source installed to compile the driver. maybe it has instructions on the site or in the tarball.

I tried it, and, well.. I got a whole bunch of errors while loading up Knoppix, and I meant a lot. If you want to see them I could probably put them in a txt for you.
Good news is, everything still works. Nothing is dying (yet). Bad news is, the sound still doesn't work, but at least I don't get that last error when I load up an mp3; it's just that nothing happens.

Can I salvage whatever went wrong, should I wait and see and try another install, or should I just reinstall?

EDIT: I didn't read your post until I installed. I didn't do anything before doing the install, but now that I check the readme, it says nothing but this:
**Before install this driver, you should make sure that your kernel had
enable "sound card support" !
(the option of "sound" item in building kernel)

..Which doesn't really tell me anything.

open up alsa-mixer or kmix or anything mixer, and see if you can turn the volumes up.
