New System

Hi all. I just recently built a new C2D system with a Biostar nVidia GeForce 7050 chipset mobo. Everything seems to be going fine except I'm a little confused on the sound setup.

The sound is Realtek ALC662 6-Channel HD Audio. I don't see the little cable were one end plugs into the dvd drive and the other end into the mobo. The cable that came with the board has one that plugs into the mobo and 6 separate plugs on the other end.

I'm not to concern with 6 channel working at the moment, but having normal sound is okay. How do I get it working with my regular 2 speakers? Wouldn't I need 5.1 speaker setup for the 6 channels to work?

Thnx.

Here's the link to the motherboard.

The cable from DVD drive to the sound card is mostly used for the DVD players which play audio CDs directly.
The other mp3/... files are played by software directly to the sound card and so the cable from CD to soundcard is not "mandatory". You must still be able to hear the music without the cable.
You must also consult the manual to find out how the cables connect from the audio card to the external speakers.

All you need is

1. connect the card (insert into pci/... slot)
2. connect speakers to card
3. install proper drivers

It's a built-in sound card and you're right, I should be able to hear sound from the speakers without that cable. I thought I hooked some headphone speakers once and didn't hear sound but I will check again when I get home.

I still need to figure the cable plugs so I can listen to dvd movies or listen to a cd discs.

Thnx.

After checking again, I do hear sound using the headphones, I assume with speakers also, I don't have any hooked up at the moment. One thing I noticed is the volume seems lower than it should be. I've checked all volume controls and they're up to maximum level.

Any thoughts?

Thnx.

The headphone set has its own volume control and its turned up to the max. I'll play around with the volume issue.

I still need to figure out the cable that goes to the DVD player, so if I play a movie I can hear the sound.

Thnx.

you should be able to hear sound without that cable
my dvd drive dousent have it installed and i have no problem

that cable is just an antiquated kudge that was required when most computers diddnt have sound capability

my old win3.1 machine needed that cable to get sound when playing an audio cd but everyting since has worked fine without it.

Late on answering this but I was able to get it to normal volume. I had to change the driver to Alsa instead of the HDA nVidia.

Thnx.
