My pro/wireless 2200bg on SUSE 10 says it's connected but I can't load any pages
I have an NEC versa m540 with intel pro/wireless 2200bg wifi.
I'm getting rather desparate. I have installed the driver ipw2200 and in kinternet when I go to the wireless conection it looks like it's installed correctly. It even says it has connected sucessfully when I try to connect but no web pages load in the browser.
(Although when I look at the wireless section in kinternet the current connection [which has to be my lan because when i disconect the lan I get no connection] says the connection is WEP encryped and itshows the signal strength should it be showing this for my lan? Could there be a conflict between my wireless and my lan?
I have WPA-PSK with data encryption TKIP (with a network key). I have the ip address correct. I have tried it with both DCHP assigned and the ip address of my router.
The wireless works fine on XP
Please help I'm tearing my hair out!!
IT WON't WORK
I'm new to linux - I had similar problems with ubuntu so I de-installed it and installed suse. I like suse and would love to be able to use it. (I can only really work with my PC on WIFI as the phone is the other end of the house - I am writing this on the floor!!!)
Distribution: PCLinuxOS 2007 on my laptop and Suse 10.2 on my desktop.

What browser are you using? When I first got my wireless connection working, only Konqueror would work. Mozilla Firefox wouldn't connect. I had to change some settings in Firefox to make it work.
If the wireless connection is configured correctly, but you cannot seem to connect to the Internet, it could be a DNS problem. I wrote a brief guide at another forum showing how to work around that problem. Look here --> link.
I recall being a Linux newbie and having similar problems ... turned out I was entering the network key incorrectly. I don't know what you do to assign this in SuSE, as I haven't tried that distro, but in the tool I was using in Fedora, you need to append 0x in front of the key to have it interpreted as a hex sequence. When I corrected this mistake, my wireless network started to function correctly.
Thanks very much for all your assistance - I have tried Konquerer and the IP address only.
Cogar I thank you for your assistance I think it could be due to conflict because my LAN is not working well either. I basically did what you suggested (I think) but it's not working still. I've tried every combination of IP address in that
"Name Servers and Domain Search" section and unchecked the "Update Name Servers and Search List via DHCP" box
I have created a web page with all the information I can think of. Please have a look It contains My XP and SUSE settings If anyone would require more information then just tell me what I have to to get it and I'll put it there too.
Ok mine did the exact same thing. I was using Kwifimanager and ndiswrapper. My card detected and set up fine i was actually able to go to some pages but it took forever.
How i fixed it:
I reinstalled everything and check my steps. Then i stumbled apon this.
Toward the bottom theres a few link of some great programs to use. I recofigured everything with Yast and then installed Wifi-Radar, and PyWireless and everything has worked great! Its super fast!!
Check if you can ping the gateway device, ( wireless router ).
Check if you can ping the nameservers.
If you can ping these addresses, then check if port 80 is open on your gateway.
I use DHCP, and it supplies the DNS addresses. You have a static address entered. So check if the nameserver entries in /etc/resolve.conf are currect. (These need to include your ISP's DNS addresses for internet access to work.) Using a static address, I don't know if there is a DHCP client to automatically enter your resolve.conf entries. For internet access, you need to check the output of the "route" command, and the
/etc/sysconfig/network/routes file. SuSE uses this file instead of /etc/route.conf . ( See "man 5 route.conf" )
Also, gateway address should be the IP address of the wireless router.
Could your router's IP address actually be 192.168.1.1? The address you have seems a bit non-standard, so I thought I would ask.
In the "DHCP Client Options", I have the "Request broadcast response" box checked. And I entered my host name. However, I read later that I should most likely have left it blank. ( My wireless is working, so I don't have the guts to change it the way they say. )
Also, be sure you don't have both your NIC card and the wireless device up at the same time.
# rcnetwork stop eth0
# rcnetwork restart wlan0
If after these to commands, the wireless tools command:
iwlist scan
responds with information on your wireless router ap, and
iwconfig wlan0
Shows your router/ap MAC address, the wireless device itself should be operating.
