Thumbs up Newbie timer not connected

Good read, but I am surprised to see this problem in the newbie section. Have read a bit about the issue but it seems there is not much info a non-tech can follow. This could be the reason the Linux community fails to grow. I have tried Ubuntu for years on my HP Pavilion, but can't do so now, it ceased to work after an Ubuntu upgrade. And yet my wife has an HP and it still runs Ubuntu, I am afraid to upgrade for fear it will die also. I will continue with my reading and trial&error.
