Mouse moving wrong way between monitors

I have Linux Mint 13 KDE on a laptop and I'm trying to share the desktop with an external monitor.

I have to have the monitor to the left of the laptop, so the mouse needs to move from the monitor right onto the laptop.

Using this
Code:
#!/bin/sh
export DISPLAY=:0
export XAUTHORITY=/home/mjolnir/.Xauthority
xrandr --auto --output VGA-1 --mode 1024x768 --right-of LVDS-1
I'm able to get the desktop shared, but the screens are obviously in the wrong order, which means that I have to move the mouse in the opposite direction between screens (which is confusing).

When I try using the obvious "--left-of LVDS-1" both screens go totally black on me.

Anyone know the issue here? Is this a bug or am I overlooking something basic?

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 with an nVidia video card ("NVIDIA Corporation G98M [Quadro NVS 160M] (rev a1)"), if any of that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

I would cobble up a video.conf for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ where you specify the video card, each Monitor and the screen. You can use the
Option "Left"
for one and "Right" for the other. Have your video card in there also. Just cut & paste from a sample xorg.conf & modify.
