mouse in virtual terminal

It seems that I can't use the mouse in virtual terminal to cut and paste. I used to be able to in mandrake but I've just switched to Slackware 9 and it doesn't seem to have this functionality (or it does but isn't working/configured properly??)
When I move the mouse it appears to be "stuck" at the top of the screen and it's like the movements are mapped wrong.... eg moving arbitrarily produces random cut and pastes...

It's just a normal average-joe kind of ps2 mouse with a wheel.

Any help greatly appreciated.
