Mouse and Keyboard lagging with Linux Kernel 2.6.11

I've just rather extensively upgraded my computer. The latest change was a new motherboard, Procesor, and hard disk. Instead of trying to get everything configured as is, I figured it would be easier to reinstall everything anew. I also wanted to redo my partitioning scheme...

Once all this was installed, I tried it out with KNOPPIX 2.8. It worked.

I figured I'd try installing Windows next (much quicker than Gentoo Linux). It worked fine with ME, 2000, and XP. It also worked.

I then repartitioned the disk and installed Gentoo. It works... kinda. When I first fired up X (with nothing else running besides the usual daemons), the mouse lagged by about .2 seconds or so. Not impossibible to work with, but quite irritating. If I run programs on my laptop via the X server running on my desktop, it remains sluggish, but if I run programs from the desktop on the laptop X server, it works fine.

This led me to suspect the X Server Configuration. I didn't see anything blatently wrong with xorg.conf (I posted the Input Sections). I then tried using gpm at the console. I experienced the same lag. This led me to suspect something else like a misconfigured kernel. I booted off the Gentoo installation cd (basically just a bash prompt on a cd; no X), mounted everything to /mnt/gentoo and chrooted inside. From there the cursor worked fine in X. This led me to try different kernels on my system. The Vanilla kernel and the Custom Gentoo kernel both have the same problem. I havn't yet installed genkernel (Automatic configuration), as I want to learn more about hotplug and coldplug before I install and rely on them.

This mouse delay is irritating, but it isn't the only problem. Occasionally, when I switch from VT7 (X) back to VT1(return to console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1), the keyboard will start to lag. If I were to try typing something like 'echo "Testing 1 2 3"',the T might appear when I press 1, the e when I press space, and so on. This makes it very difficult to use the console. Occasionally, the console totally locks up, and I have to ssh in from my laptop and reboot the desktop to get it working again.

My first stop in the step of troubleshooting process was Google. Everyone who had mouse lag seemed to be running some sort of game while they experienced the problem. I've also tried some suggestions from this site such as disabiling ACPI in 'menu makeconfig' and changing the mouse resolution. I also havn't been able to find any cases of this "keyboard delay". Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my absurdly long post.

Try to use a tool such as gnome-system-monitor or gkrellm to see what exactly is happening, whether the cpu usage is 100%, or the disk activity etc. The "top" command may also help.

It does seem to be an issue with the kernel though...I wont be able to help you much there.
