mounting two file systems to one point

Hi,

I just installed a new hard-drive to my linux 8.0 box. I created the partitioan and file system as /dev/hdb1.

I have a partion from from first disc as /dev/hda5 (/var).

Actually, I want to use mount /dev/hdb1 and /dev/hda5 together to one mount point and I want to use it as a one file system (/var)

How can I do it? Any idea?

Thanks in advance...

Sophie...

you want to share that space for one /var? bit strange to put it there... but you can do that using LVM (Logical Volume Manager) but it's not too straightforward always. maybe yuo'd rather have one as /var and another as /var/lib or such like.

Hi Chris,

Thanks alot for your reply.

I didn't know I can mount subdirectories like that.

So, what I write below is ok?

/dev/hda5 /var/
/dev/hdb1 /var/www/customer1/folder1/

But /var/ on /dev/hda5/ also will have www directory!! I just want to mount a subdirectory under customer1 to /dev/hdb1

Sorry. I think I am confused a little bit.

Thank you..
Sophie..

yeah that's not a problem at all. you say you didn't know you can mount subdirectories, but if you think about it, you're already doing it with / and /var... just a logical extension. asl ong as an empty directory exists on a native filesystem you can mount a drive / device / partition there no problem at all.

move folder1 to temp.folder1, then make a new /var/www/customer1/folder1 and mount /dev/hdb1 to it. move eveything in temp.folder1 into folder1. presto
