Unhappy Monitors Troubles

Hi,

I have installed Linux RedHat version 8.0. It works very well with
my dell crt monitor. It also works with a couple other flat screen monitors which I've tried. I just plug them in and it works.

However, I can't get my new lcd acer flatscreen to work (It's an Acer G185H 18.5 inch LCD monitor). It sayes "Signal not supported" Text mode works ok. But not graphics mode. I know the monitor is ok because it works with Windows 7. But when I plug it into my linux box it will not work.

I checked the xconfig file and made sure the settings are correct for my monitor and video card. I also made sure the hsync and vsync and resolution are correct. I've tried several different resolution settings e.g 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768.

I just don't understand why some monitors work so easy (just plug them in) but this new one will not. I even took it back and exchanged it for another one of the same type and the new one did the same thing.

I know my video card is ok, it works well with different monitors ?

What can I try ? I'm stumped

Thanks for the help,
-areal

I'd run X -configure and try the resulting config. If that works, copy the monitor section from the new config to your existing one. If not, try narrowing the timing ranges by hand.
