Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Modem ID or alternative

Just got a Dell B130 laptop w/kubuntu. There is no
W/XP on it. I think it has a Conextant modem but not
sure. No info using lspci. Dell site had no info
either.
I've searched till everything runs together.
My question is there a way I'm missing to ID the
modem and chipset?
#2 If nothing possible is a

serial modem

or a

pci

which would be the better bet.
System has
PCI Bridge Intel 8201FB/FBM/FR/PW/FRM (ich6) Port 1 Rev03
PCI Bridge Intel 8201FB/FBM/FR/PW/FRM (ich6) Port 4 Rev03
PCI Bridge Intel 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge Rev D3
ISA Bridge Intel 82801 FBM (ich6m) LPC Interface Bridge
Rev 03
thanks

This guy put Suse 10.1 on the system and said the modem is indeed conextant. You can try downloading the linuxant drivers and see if they work. If so, you'll probably want to pay to make full use of the modem, or else you'll be stuck at 14.4kbps.

Linmodem support is where you should start. The scanModem script by Marv Stodolsky will ID your modem. You need to go to the Beginner's Linux documentation page.
