Modem drivers for mobile phones?

Hello all,

I am a bit confused on what a standard linux distro provides and what it requires. Here is my problem:
What I have?
Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop
OS:PCLinuxOS (basically a variant of Mandrivia)
Mobile Phones:Nokia 6020(with serial USB Convertor)
has EGPRS enabled and I can access internet on phone.

--What I am trying to do?
--I am trying to access the internet from my laptop through 6020 using kppp only. I do not have gnokii installed, nor hciscan tools to connect to bluetooth, so I am using the serial convertor.

Now I have tried every possible thing however nokia 6020 phone fails to respond. dmesg shows that the serial convertor is connected.

--I need help on?
--a) how to open an AT terminal and ping the modem.I have tried through pppd but it just fails to connect and its also a bit extensive.Any easier way ?
--b) Am i missing any modem driver for linux? Windows XP requires nokia mobile phone modem driver. Is it the same in linux?

Simon if you are there please enlighten me.

Cheers!

This post might help - it's for Fedora rather than PCLinuxOS but otherwise the environment sounds similar to yours.

Everything worked fine till wvdialconf create. It managed to identify my nokia modem. Then I tried using kppp it hanged while "initializing the modem". After that I checked dmesg it said:
APIC error on CPU0: 00(40). After that I rebooted my pc , my phone many times. Tried all the permutations and combinations but now wvdialconf create is not recognizing my modem nor there is any wvdial.conf file in /etc dir. I guess my phones modem is destroyed
