Modem Blue
I am a newbie to Linux community and i have recently installed a RedHat Linux 8.0 on one of my machines. I have a dula boot machine and the other runs on windows me. My machine is p cele 1ghz, Asus tusi- m motherboard and 256 mb of ram. sis 630t vga card and one internal modem, HSP 56 Micro modem (not a software modem) PCI modem, one BTTV 868 based tv tuner card , and yamaha DXSG based sound card . I have no problems with all the other things other than, My modem and TV tuner card.
first the modem.
The modem used to hang up my mouse whenever i try to configure it. so by reading some books i came to understand that two different come ports are required so i disconnected my modem and mouse and placed my modeom in com port 1 and my mouse at come port 2 so my mouse stopped hanging.
i tryed to configure my modem now using the kppp setup module and the normal networking wizard. modem was detected and the other tthings done. but when i try to connect to the internet it shows intializing for alonmg time and no reply in the log window. i dont know what to do.
i did not install any driver or any thing as such in the linux machine and i am typeing this message from the windows part of mchine which works fine. please help me out as i am in need to scrap this windows me altogether.

# Configuring a pci modem
To configure a pci modem, open an x terminal and su - to the root account:
Code:
[phil@fancypiper phil]$ su -
Password:
[root@fancypiper root]# cat /proc/pci
Look for your modem in the returned list. Look for something similar to mine:
Code:
Bus 2, device 2, function 0:
Communication controller: PCI device 151f:0000 (TOPIC SEMICONDUCTOR Corp) (rev 0).
IRQ 5.
I/O at 0xc400 [0xc407].
With this info, I use the setserial command:
Code:
[root@fancypiper root]# setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 port 0xc400 uart 16550a
Then I test the modem with the internet connection wizard and it works. I edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and enter the setserial command:
Code:
[root@fancypiper root]# pico -w /etc/rc.d/rc.local
My file for an example
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Redhat /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.
touch /var/lock/subsys/local
# configure modem
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 port 0xc400 uart 16550a
Now, it remains configured after a reboot.

This is your modem entry:
Bus 0, device 13, function 0:
Modem: PCTel Inc HSP MicroModem 56 (rev 2).
IRQ 11.
I/O at 0x9800 [0x983f].
This is your IRQ:
IRQ 11.
This your port:
0x9800
This is your setserial command using the info you got from your cat /proc/pci command:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 11 port0x9800 uart 16550a
After issuing that command, can the internet connection wizard detect and connect to the internet? If so, place that command as I previously posted.
