Mice; a scroll wheel and me

I have my mouse set up, it works and everything, but the scroll wheel refuses to scroll things.

What up with that?

I am running slackware 9.1 (2.4.22) the mouse is a 2 button + wheel optical logitech.

thanks in advance

You need to open your /etc/X11XF86Config file, and in the section describing the mouse, add the line

Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

then restart X, and voila!
