Make (Haldaemon?) detect HotSwap Sata (II) drives in Linux

I have Sata II Controller , Sata II Drives and Caddies
however i can't get Linux to detect the Hard drives without rebooting

Windows Xp does it

Linux picks up my USB drives and USB Sata Controller
however not the straight Hard Disk

Any suggestions to get Hal to monitor for Sata drives??
