Lost permissions to mount usb volumes

Hello!

Recently I rebuilt this old laptop using a minimal install of Ubuntu and installed xfce. Everything was fine until yesterday. For some reason, I've lost permissions to mount usb volumes at least in a gui. I don't know if I can mount them from a command line or from outside X because I don't know what device the usb volume is.

I know it's a permissions issue because I can get into Thunar as root and it will let me mount it no problem. In fact, if I exit from there without unmounting the volume, I can still access it from my regular account but I can't umount it.

What do I need to change to get this to mount when I click on it again?

Have you tried installing pmount? With Gnome, it uses the gnome-volume-manager for this purpose.

No, but I figured out that if I put entries in /etc/fstab for /dev/sdb1, sdc1, sdd1, sde1, etc. it seems to work just fine. The only problem I get is an error message when I eject/unmount the volume saying that it's unable to open the device (/dev/sd*1) but that's probably because it just ejected. Little bit of a pain because if I run into a device that uses a device entry I don't have in the fstab, I have to go in and edit it but it works so I'm not going to complain too much.
