LITE ON SOHW-812SX eventually freezes all USB traffic when plugged in

I have one of those Wal-Mart ECS A535s. It has 384MB of RAM and all of the other specs are standard. It is one of the machines with the 1.1 GHz processor. I have slackware 10 installed. I use ndiswrapper for WiFi access. I also have the above mentioned DVD writer. When this drive is plugged in, within an hour the WiFi has frozen and my shells go insane with character repeats. You have to type *very* slowly if you don't want a screen full of repeated characters. I'd like to be able to get away from XP as much as possible, but not being able to use my DVD writer is a huge letdown. Suggestions? Thanks.
