Has anyone in here managed to install Linux on å system with the latest nvidia graphics, geforce 8000 series? I have a computer with core2duo and a pcie nvidia geforce 8800GTS graphics card. The "nv" driver does not support this card, so no liveCDs is possible to run on this system :-(
I tried to install Ubuntu from the old Debian installer, and managed to get the terminal. From there I installed the latest Nvidia driver only to find my screen to go green when entering the gdm login screen. X does not respond at all. But it seems that it's loading, but then it goes green. Anyone to help?
Sturla,
I have had similar problems myself with a similar system(AMD rather than Intel).
I also tried k/ubuntu versions with no success, but i do have Fedora core 6 installed.
Probably not my first choice distro, but it is better than being stuck with windows on a new machine!
Definitely worth trying.......
Hope this helps

In the xserver configuration, there should also be a choice to use Nvidia, not just nv. I think either nv or vesa are used as a supplement when there is no other alternative?
I use a PCI-E 7600GS and I have the choice of nv and Nvidia. I choose Nvidia.
At the moment I am using Ubuntu 6.10. Included in this are Binary Drivers which are activated in Add/Remove in Applications. If these drivers are not activated you will not get the choice of Nvidia in your xserver configuration setup.
I had trouble getting my 8800 GTS working initially, but I recently updated my bios on my motherboard, and then followed the manual install instructions for the NVidia driver (version 9755)
I don't have sound at the moment, but I'm not sure if that is a driver issue or something else.
Anyway, the card does seem to work, but you may have to update your bios first.
