My experience is that there will be more written on this subject than it deserves. It's certainly the case with rooting androids. Try a search like
+ps3 _install +linux
All I can say is that if you still have an Install Other OS option, do NOT install the newest firmware. There exists hacked firmware that will retain the feature. I doubt the mods will let me link to it, but just search for it.

I'm not sure what you just said....the question was whether Sony has changed their policy and now allows other OSes.
Well, the main reason why $ony removed the feature is because the same hacker who released the patch I mentioned, managed to root the PS3. They were afraid that this would eventually allow users to do much more than $ony would like with the consoles, so they shut this option down.
