Linux nVidia port support

Hi, I will likely be getting a new monitor soon as my current one is making a buzzing noise. I've already replaced the capacitors twice over the years, and it is 2006 vintage. Hence, I think it's time for a new one!

I'd like to double-check if there are any considerations regarding the outputs from my GeForce 750 Ti graphics card. I've had a look at the Readme & don't see anything about this, so there's probably nothing to worry about.

DVI has worked fine for me for the last 10 years, I don't like VGA as IMO it looks fuzzy on Linux, how does HDMI fare? Does it work as perfectly as DVI? Has anyone any experience with similar nVidia cards on linux & use the HDMI port without any problems? I'm checking because some monitors don't have DVI inputs.

My system is running Debian Jessie, using nVidia drivers.

Thanks!

Unless you're using an old CRT monitor, an analog VGA signal is going to look at least a little "fuzzy" regardless of what OS you use.

They're both digital video signals. They should look exactly the same. HDMI can carry audio too.

Then just use the HDMI. Heck, your 750Ti probably has a DisplayPort output too.
I know when I bought my monitor a couple of years ago, it had DVI and DisplayPort, but no HDMI because the monitor manufacturer didn't want to pay the HDMI royalty.

Excellent, thanks for the response! I was looking at some Dell + other screens earlier that didn't have DVI, hence the above question. Now I'm looking at iiyama ones that do anyway so I might just plump for them as they seem decent enough.

It is LCD not CRT. I sometimes wondered about VGA on Linux as Windows seemed to do a better job of making a VGA sharp than my Linux box did!

In my experience, monitors using hdmi = My TV, works perfectly, but I've had 2 monitors with hdmi inputs, and neither one worked very well AT ALL with it.

I've never had a monitor using hdmi have a quality output, it's always off-centered, or doesn't properly display the whole screen (as if it were zoomed in or out).

Display port has always worked perfectly.

DVI has always worked perfectly.

Not sure why hdmi has issues for me, but 2 monitors and multiple machines (a desktop and a Dell docking station with several laptops) both had the same issues trying to run hdmi, and didn't just have issues with linux, it was present in Windows as well.

That's just my experience.

You're welcome. If you're not a gamer, make sure you stay away from TN panels.
