brooktree/conexant chip based cards are supported by the bttv driver, ATI cards by the gatos driver, nvidia cards by the, uh, i forget, but there a driver for their framegrabber chip too. Problem with bttv is not all tuners are supported, so don't bet it'll work with any 878 card. There's a file called "cardlist" that comes with bttv that'll give you specific models it detects. Also, check the card manufacturer's website for hardware incompatibilities. My Hauppauge card has problems with some SiS, VIA and ALi chipset mobos, for example, but works great with the bttv driver otherwise.
Also note that the card compatibility list for bttv cards is often wrong.
For instance, a 3DFX TVPCI card, with or without the FM chip, is listed as supported. Brother, it aint supported. If it is supported, then nobody in the world was given the information on how to get it to work.
It's the tuner that causes the most probs. The Pinnacle PCTV Pro, for example, switched tuners on later models without changing the model #. Hauppauge cards have the best Linux support, but again check to make sure you won't have hardware probs. I had a VoodooTV card that I couldn't get to work in a Tyan Trinity S2380 mobo, even under Windows, so it's not always the driver's fault. Think 3dfx made different versions of that card for different regions too, so I imagine the person in the referenced thread has a tuner problem also. The cheap ATI TV cards use bttv too BTW, it's only the all-in-wonders that you need the gatos driver for.
The ATI TV Wonder VE works pretty good. No FM chip, inexpensive, works like a dream in Linux and Windows. They can be found just about anywhere, Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I think I got mine for 49.99 might have been 39 something, I can't remember. It's supported by BTTV otherwise I wouldn't have suggested it. The chip's a BT878 or BT848, the Windows drivers are for an 848 model (they still work miraculously) but linux detects it as a 878. I've also noticed with some of the other Win drivers that it says it's a 878.
