LEDs come on every 15 seconds. Is this normal: scsi raid?
Hi,
I have a 5-3 scsi enclosure (80-pin backplane), with three scsi drives, in software raid 5, with LVM on linux (Centos 4.3). There is nothing on the disks. They are partitioned and have a files system of course, and I can mount and write to the raid array.
The leds on the drives come on (almost in unison) every 15 (or so) seconds, no matter what the computer is doing. Is this normal? And if so, why? Besided being concerned about problems, it gets old hearing all three scsi drives firing up, over and over again. I have checked the drives with smartctl and everything seems fine.
For kicks, I put another scsi drive in the bay (partitioned and mounted it), but did not make it part of the raid array. The weird thing is that the led does not come on (even when I write to it). But, about every 90 seconds i hear it make some noise (like it is also accessing the drive). This observation may be incorrect and completely misleading, but I thought I would throw it out there.
Ideas? Is there a way to stop it from happening?
