I'm having a problem with Kppp connecting to the internet using my Best Data External Modem. I could connect in Mandrake 9.2, but I now get the same error in Mandrake 10.1, Mepis, and Fedore Core 2. Kppp Dials the modem just fine and connects to my isp, then times out waiting for the ppp interface. no information is logged other than Kppp timed out with a signal 15.

Since the same error happens in every new distro I have, I'm beginning to think my modem is no longer supported. If anyone has had this happen and solved it, or has any ideas please let me know!

try a couple of things
first try running kppp as root and see if it works (might just be a permission thing)

second thing -- try wvdial
might be some incompatability between kppp and pppd
if wvdial is installed (which wvdial) do as root

touch /etc/wvdial.conf &&
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

then just go to /etc/wvdial.conf and enter phone # username and passwd

then as root
wvdial

Thanks for your fast reply! I will try that with my modem hooked up. right now I have my friends US Robotics external modem hooked up in a serial port and it worked perfectly when I tried to connect with kppp. So, it just might be my Best Data modem.
