kernel panic while installing fc4 or ubuntu

i m a new user for linux and i hav encountered the folowing errors
i tried installing fc-4 and got an error tht mount point not found and finally kernel panic

in ubuntu the installer crashed aftr disk partitioning

in mandriva 2006 free got an error " no hdlists found"..

so u can probably guess the amount of frustation..phew..plz help

I have replied to your mdv question but to be rude

it looks like you would be better off ....in the short term....just downloading a good live cd to see how things are in the linux world
