I have a 32GB sandisk SD card that I've owned for about two weeks.
I'm trying to copy stuff off of it but it keeps crapping out. I get I/O errors, the directory I'm copying from unmounts and the card reappears in /dev/ with a different number (ie it's mmcblk0, then it's mmcblk1).
This happens if I mount it read-only aswell.
I even tried not mounting it and just going dd if=/dev/mmcblk0p1 of=blah, but dd only manages to copy a small random number of MB before it dies.
dmesg is filled with stuff like:
[153844.778473] mmcblk0: error -123 requesting status
[153844.778477] end_request: I/O error, dev mmcblk0, sector 63
[153844.778480] Buffer I/O error on device mmcblk0p1, logical block 0
[153844.778483] lost page write due to I/O error on mmcblk0p1
[153844.778614] mmcblk0: retrying using single block read
[153844.778619] mmcblk0: error -123 sending status comand
[153844.778622] mmcblk0: error -123 sending read/write command, response 0x0, card status 0x0
So is this memory card screwed? I should hope not its brand new and it cost $100, but it sure looks like it.
Before you abandon it, are you using an internal reader? If so buy an external usb reader that will read sdhc and sd-extreme cards and see if that will solve your problem.
After the above if you can not see any files or partitions then I would use fdisk and build a new partition then make a new file system then checkout the card.

I've noticed that some SD card readers don't work properly. Every time I try to use a particular one I bought, there's a chance that it will fail in a similar manner, and the SD cards I use are all good. So, I bought another reader of a different brand, and it works every time.
The main problem is that all card readers for sale are not capable of reading and writing to the sdhc cards and you have to be careful when you buy one and make sure it will. They will list 68 different type of cards and you still will not see the sdhc card.
