Is it possible? ..kernel flashed BIOS
Hi everybody,
I have a really weird problem. After recompiling the kernel and modules, and after writing new lilo.conf and MBR and then rebooting, the screen went black just after loading the kernel. After the reboot I saw: BIOS ROM checksum error..insert a boot floppy etc...
My new kernel wrote to the BIOS flash ROM! I have thought that it is a hardware problem, but re-flashing the BIOS chip from image helped (on the EEPROM flasher). It was alright then, but few minutes later, after loading my custom kernel again, the same error occurred.
It is really strange. If anyone could tell me what the problem might be, or had experienced something similar, please let me know.
thanx
Lempour
P.S.: Don't advise me to buy a new motherboard.

Thank you,
I also think it could be a hardware problem. I'm going to troubleshoot the CPU and memory, maybe the Flash ROM chip too.
best regards,
Lempour

Definitly troubleshoot it, but until then, if there is a jumper with a 1-2 position for 5volt and a 2-3 or 3-4 position for 12volt flash upgrades, remove this jumper entirely from the motherboard. This makes the flash upgrade voltage ZERO, which effectively disables it.
