Is Athlon XP i586 or i686...?

Hi there,

similar questions have been asked here, but not exactly this one:

When I have a choice of an i586 and an i686 binary package, which one should I prefer for an Athlon XP CPU?

Thanks!

i586 is the equivalent to pentium and i686 is equivalent to pentium pro. the k6 and athlon are the amd chips as opposed to the Intel chips.
I know the code with fedora and redhat is i686 but this code will still run on an i586 system but it will be optimized for i686.
All processors pentium pros or greater and athlons should use i686...so the short answer to your question is i686 :-)
