internet config on redhat 9-is this common?

i am new to linux and finally got a dual boot system up with xp on hda1, and redhat 9 and ubuntu on hdb1&3. i have a dell dim. 2400 and a cable modem. since trying to get the internet configured last week, i took out the 2d hd and tried to uninstall grub. that didn't work, so i lost the use of hda. no big deal, except that i couldn't get redhat or ubuntu to recognize the eth0 connection. i tried a couple of different things, to no avail. then this morning, i turned on the computer and it told me of new updates ready. it fixed itself while i was sleeping. is this common? or did i do something last night that required the system to be powered down for a while to take effect?
edit to add: i forgot to mention that i can't find my installation cd, and can't boot from a dos floppy(no floppy drive). i burned 3 dos boot cd's, and an ultimate boot cd. i tried to rewrite the mbr with several tools, but no luck. so i just put the hd back in.

Probably it needed rebooting to take all changes you had made .
On grub.conf u can add the name of the o/s you want your system to startup with on boot up .

For eth interface to work you must deal with the files /etc/sysconfig/network and
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and edit ifcfg-eth0
