Intel HDA Sound (ICH9) not coming out of the speakers though driver and software work

Dear fellow Linux Users.

I have a strange problem with my audio on Linux. Some months ago I bought a new laptop (an Asus M51Vseries (M/B version M51Vr)), and now I want to install Linux on it. However, there are some problems. When I first booted up my newly installed Linux distro, Debian Lenny (kernel 2.6.26-1-686), I had sound when I tried to play movies, mp3s, etc. However, after next boot, the sound had disappeared. Nothing came out of the speakers even though everything had worked before. Nothing had changed in the mixers as far as I can tell, either. So I googled a lot and came about pages telling me I should edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and passing on a model option. Unfortunately it didn't work. I then put off the project a while, and yesterday I tried installing Linux again. Magically, sound worked again, and after rebooting, it had gone. I am at my wit's end.

When I think about it, I find it strange that sound that HAD worked, should stop working, and then start working again by passing a model=... (I tried several) in alsa-base.

According to alsamixer (and yes, all channels are at the highest volume level, NOT muted), the chip is a Realtek ALC663. The Alsa version is 1.0.16.

Relevant output from lspci:
Quote:
kasper@cicero:~$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series]
I hope you are able to help me. I really want to get rid of Windows, but I won't accept not having sound.

hi

fair enough no sound no linux

altho you have mentioned that its alc663 lets get some verification as the model name needs to be exact for your kernel driver to work correctly...if you start changing the alsa-base file

post the output of this pls

Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec
if it fails THEN I need to see the output of

ls /proc/asound/

2) I assume you have installed alsa?

3) I have assumed you know how to unmute and raise volumes?

eg if you run alsamixer....press m to mute or Unmute...tab to the appropiate output sections...main and pcm and use the arrow keys to raise

I do, version 1.0.16 as stated. As I mentioned in my original post, the strange thing is that sometimes I have sound, sometimes I don't. I have just come home from uni. I booted up, and sure thing, I could hear music and all. Then I rebooted, and lo and behold, no sound. It is strange.

hi

ok I have another thing for you to look at...

you could then try this script to get to the latest alsa.

on my dual core e5200 with dsl download speed ~ 3500 kbps it took 10 minutes and the script tells you how to tail and watch the output log.

its that log and the output of alsa-info.sh that I allude to in the link. But as the sidux user already knew what I was talking about....I also supply the wiki page to other link.

2) both scripts IMHO are very useful. the alsa-info one can be used if this fails and you need to join the alsa user mailing list at alsa-project.org

good luck
