Smile Installing Printer

I'm using Slackware 13. I have HP LaserJet P1005 printer. I want to use it but there is not any driver file provided for Linux. I'm confused from where to start. Anyone please help me.

The driver is called f002jzs and should be in your cups installation.
In general, vendors do not need to provide linux drivers because free-software drivers come pre-installed for most hardware.

open browser, enter

localhost:631

into address field
(there is also a menu item in the control center).

dunno - what are you doing? (you usually have to be pedantic)

trying to configure cups via a browser?
what is the full message?
is cupsd running?

sudo service cups status

Smile Cupsd

Now it works, there is Common UNIX Printing System 1.3.11
But I'm confuse what to do and where to start. Should I download the driver file from cups.org, or it is already there in my system?

The driver is already in your system. (It is Windows that needs this sort of propping up.)

Reason it out: you want to add a printer - which is an administration task.
Look for something to do with administration.

Mine has a rather fancy page with an administration tab at the top - clicking that takes me to a page with a "Printers" section and helpful buttons.

Start with "Find New Printers"... it's fairly intuitive after that.

Me - in gnome - I normally just go to System > Administration > Printers > find new printer - and follow the instructions. IIRC: there is something similar in Kontrol Centre for KDE. Now you have cupsd working, that will probably work.

When you install a printer, the cups installer displays a choice of drivers. It also gives you the option of adding a driver manually.

What choices did it give you?

With a similar printer, I'm using Gutenprint and it works perfectly.
