i865G - no sound - C-Media9397A

Hello,

I have an MSI motherboard 865G onboard video and sound.
I have Debian (Woody) kernel 2.4.20 (I have also tried 2.4.21-rc7-ac1). I have gotten the video and lan working. However I cannot get sound to work using Alsa driver 9.4

I tried using Alsa C-Media 8338 (would not load)
The Alsa driver that does seem to work is the intel8x0
This driver does load and XMMS does seem to play files using the Alsa plugin... meters are moving. However no sound comes out of the speakers. I try to using other media players and still no sound. I am using Gnome 2.2 X does not start automatically. I have even tried playing a mp3 file using mpg123 filename.mp3 no sound (before I type startx at the linux prompt).
I then tried another hard disk drive with Windows XP installed and the sound works well. So the hardware is o.k.
The only thing I can think of is that the C-Media 9397A Codec is not supported in Alsa at this time. When I do an:

Was this on an mb with the intel 865G chipset?

I think I narrowed down my issue to not having PCM control.

When I type:
amixer set PCM 100 unmute
as user/superuser I get the following:

amixer: Unab le to find simple control 'PCM',0

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I will google and see if I can find something on the www.

Thanks in advance.

My situtation is nearly identical.

Hello Bluester,

I have the same problem with the same hardware, 82801EB AC'97 onboard audio. I have a Intel D865GBL motherboard.

Have had no luck solving it. Were you able to figure it? I was curious about the drivers at Intel but I have Mandrake 9.1. The drivers are for RedHat and SUSE.

Think that they could work in MDK?

Thanks,

Hans Erick

Bit of an old thread, but maybe somebody is still reading it.

If you modules are loaded and xmms is jiggling its LED's, maybe you just have a mixer problem. What do you see when you run alsamixer inside a terminal window? Have you tried unmuting/turning up all possible output channels.

The reason I ask is that the AC 97 sound chip on my 865g board uses ALSA's 'Surround' channel. At least some non-alsa mixers (e.g. kmix in KDE) do not show this channel. Since ALSA mutes all channels by default there is no way you will ever hear anything without an ALSA-enabled mixer.

Hi,

Thanks for replying maroon. I have played with aumixer and kmix with no luck? Are you using a different mixer from these? Or do you know one that I can download? Thanks again.

Hi H.E. - I am not familiar with the Red Hat/Mandrake way of handling sound, but there seem to be lots of people posting with one of these distro's and no sound on an AC97.

I've installed Debian or Knoppix on several different machines with AC97 sound. Every time I had to use ALSA, but every time it worked.

But if Intel are supplying a Red Hat driver, maybe you should try that before getting involved with ALSA. I don't think an ALSA mixer will be any help unless you have ALSA itself installed to drive your hardware.

Some Mandrake posters claim to have tried ALSA, so maybe that is also on your system somewhere and just needs to be configured. In that case try the snd-intel8x0 driver, certainly use a native ALSA mixer like alsamixer, and try all channels, not just the obvious ones.
Don't forget to press 'm' to unmute the channel.

And make sure your speakers are plugged in

Hope that helps, MB

anben,

Not really. What I get now is like an old radio program from the 20's or 30's. Very scratchy and far away sounding, barely audiable.

I'm not sure what I did to get this "improvement". I did download all available security patches and program updates. This might have done something. I think I"ll wait for MDK 9.2 RC final and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, MDK goes into the wood chipper

Good Luck,

Hans Erick

intel 82865G

Can anybody please tell me where to get debian driver for Intel 82865G.
Iam trying on sarge. I am just getting 480x640!!!

My monitor is Dell 773S. I also tried with Samsung Syncmaster 793s.

Video card is: Intel 82865G

I also did this as someone suggested:

>Make sure that you have `discover' installed (apt-get install

>discover) then try and reconfigure the server again with low priority.

>dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86

Still same resolution!

I am attaching the logfile herewith after doing the following:

sleep 10

killall X
