If you mean you wish to use alpine linux then it would be next to impossible. Routers have some very unique hardware and they have almost no room for even the smallest x86 distro's.

If you look at dd-wrt and the others like Merlin and tomato you may find some help on your router.

Time to get a supported router or use a old computer to act as a router.

Linux and various other OS's like BSD run on a variety of hardware. Almost any hardware that a distro can run on could be turned into a router or even a firewall/router.

The term router is not a set in stone word.
I'd ask what do you wish to do with the device?

A typical home router may have an ability to connect to an ISP internally so that may need to be known.

I bought one of these on sale and it was a good little product for a soho router on dd-wrt.

A web search for "Linux router" will turn up many useful links about using Linux computers as routers.

In additions, there are Linux-based router firmwares specifically for routers, One of my LUG members using something called "tomato."
