USB modems are often hybrid devices. When plugged in, they first announce themselves as a USB Mass Storage Device or USB CD Drive to the host system, so that the host (typically Windows) can read and execute an autorun file from that volume. The file being executed (which might be a driver) then switches the device into another mode, so that it subsequently announces itself as a USB communications device.

Since the contents of the volume is rarely useful for Linux-based systems, they have a package called "USB mode switch" installed that immediately switches the USB device into its second mode, which is the actual modem mode.

If you really want to access the contents of the storage volume, you'll have to remove the USB mode switch package. But I don't see a reason for doing so - what do you expect of that?

Terminal...

Open a terminal and use the command "lsusb" The modem will be seen with an ID number(xxxx:xxxx) that will give you information on the chip used.

The modem is seen by linux as a CD device and has to be converted to function. The package USB_ModeSwitch, found in the Ubuntu repositories, should do this automatically. It comes from Draisberghof, and there is a useful forum there if you have a problem.
