How to read a v4l loopback device?

Hi all

I'm -desperately- looking for example code or documentation for -reading- images off a V4L loopback device driven by "motion". I have XAWTv and Camsource but I can't even begin to guess where in the 1000's of lines of code of each of these programs to look for how to open a loopback and read images off it...

All examples I can find only show how to FEED a loopback, not READ from it...!

ANY help appreciated!
