How to log hard drive activity?

This question is driving me crazy, as I know there is a way to do it (I've done it before) but forgot, and googling for 1 hour gave me no results. Basically, there is weird access going on with my external HD, which is supposed to be NTFS and read only. I want to what program is accessing that HD, since there should be none.

Thanks.

when suspect that there is something going and you want to know what is running
in the background try
top or ps aux | less and you might need to check your mount option in /etc/fstab
for that HD
