How to increase "/dev/mouse" update frequency?

Hi,
I'm wondering if there is any way to increase the frequency in which the kernel updates the mouse data. When reading from /dev/mouse, I get periodical readings ~8ms apart. As far as I know, USB should give a resolution of at least 2ms. Does anybody know how I can increase the number of readings from the mouse? (I actually have to derive the mouse's speed and acceleration, and given the position I have to differentiate twice for the latter, making a 8ms resolution far too inaccurate for my application; 500µs would be cool, but 1ms should do the trick. I'd appreciate any help, as I don't really have the time to mess with the sensors directly, giving me an additional headache regarding the question on how to feed the data to the computer).
