Question how much does a chipset effects your performance? (is VIA any good?)

I'm building a new computer for myself, with a intel core 2 due e6300 CPU, however I'm having doubts about with asus systemboard to buy, P5LD2 SE or P5VD2-X..

They are both very similar but P5LD2 SE is more expensive and it comes with a intel 945P chipset, P5VD2-X comes with a VIA chipset..

The other differences between the 2 boards don't matter that much to me, although I would prefer to have 4 memory slots

I really need some opinions, I read some stuff from intel, that the core 2 cpus may work better with some intel chipsets, but they didn't mentioned 945P, so that chipset inst that great to begin with..., and I read some positive stuff from the new via chipsets using new intel cpus but im skeptical about it.

the computer i plan on building
CPU = e6300
2x1gb 533 ram
geforce 7600 gs

Do you insist on getting an ASUS motherboard? I have one in my main pc (C2D 6600/ASUS P5B) and I have to say I'm pretty sorry I spent so much money on it; especially since I recently bought a used AMD3800 that has an ASROCK S939SLI motherboard; it doesn't cost a third of the ASUS board but it walks all over it - in terms of functionality, Linux compatibility, options, etc etc.

I can't say, however, whether they do just as well with Core 2 Duos. But it may be well worth looking into; I've read reviews which call the ASROCK ConroeXfire "impressive" compared to the far more expensive high-end ASUS boards. One example:
