Check lappy specs or check KDE InfoCenter for how your sound card is seen. Or lspci from terminal can help tell you what sound card chip/driver is needed. And lsmod will list modules used in Suse. Check Sax for sound config utility and choose correct driver. Otherwise check Suse10 manual or forum for sound config guide.
Tuxmobile or linux-on-laptops may have linux install notes for your lappy model to help you too.

I'm having exactly the same problem.
Compaq Armada 7400. SuSE 10
Yast did not install the sound card but it did ask to detect the presence of some older sound chips and it came up with nothing. so I tried the manual install instead
From the Windows XP installation the Sound Card is a ESS ES1879 Plug-n-Play
So I selected that card from the list but then got the following error
"The kernel module snd-es18xx for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters"
I tried a bunch of alternative parameters but so far no success
Funny thing is I used to Have SuSE 9.3 and the sound was fine...........!
Can anyone help?
