How do I get sound in Mandrake 10?

I have a P4c 3ghz proc, DFI Lanparty pro875b MB, 1024mb dual channel Corsair TwinX1024 PC3200C2Pro ram, SoundBlaster Audigy 2 soundcard (not the Platnum) PNY Verto Geforce FX5900Ultra 256 video card, Thermaltake XaserIII super tower with side window, lots of fans, lotsa lights, 21" Dell P1110 Trinitron Flatscreen monitor, Logitech access keyboard, Logitech MX700 cordless mouse, Logitech Z680 THX Certified 5.1 Speakers, 4x2.4x12 DVD +\- DVDR/RW drive, 16X48X lite-on DVD-Rom Drive, MSN DSL with DSL1000 router, Mandrake Linux10 Kernal 2.6 download version. I'm a total newbie.
My sound card won't put out any sound. I've selected Audigy and EMU10K1 driver packages with the same results with both of these within KDE3 desktop, They don't work.. LOL.. Please help. Also I downloaded the latest IA32 video driver package from Nvidia but it just sits there looking pretty on my KDE desktop as I don't know or understand as to how to install it. Please help me with this. I also can't reply to anything within Mandrake as it keeps telling me I have to log in to the website before I can post but when I do and I retype everything I still get asked to log in.. LOL.... My fingers got soo tired I finally retreated to WinXP and IE to make my posts. Anyone know whats going on with this? I've downloaded and installed all available update packages for my installation within KDE. hope some one can help..
Thanks in advance Keith E. Whisman cowboykeith09@msn.com

nope.. still no sound.. I ran through the configuration setup for KDE and had a blast setting things up. I found an option for sound and clicked on test sound and low and behold I have sound. But I can't seem to get any of my CD's to play music. I've got all updates installed on my installation. Any suggestions? Also I I went to KMIX and turned everything on an all the volluums up.. NODDA. No music from my speakers... DOH

Does Linux require the CD audio cables to be plugged into the CD roms to the sound cards to get audio? On windows machines we've done away with that long ago. All sound gets sent through the IDE pata cable from the CDROM to the controller, MB. Please don't tell me that I have to tear into my box and somehow wrap my hand in there to plug in a stinking cd audio cable that nobody uses anylonger. Keith

Yep.. I got it. Ok guys if you can't get audio CD's to play try checking to make sure that your wee little audio cable is present should be a narrow gray cable with 3 wires in it going from your cdrom drive to your sound card. I dug out an old cable out of my heap of junk and guess what. My audio CD's are loud as heck. CaptainCaveman........ Keith

for sound you may need link for what for example kscd looks for and how m10 has cdroms listed. i had to link dev/dvd to dev/cdrom1 for cds to be heard and choose cd1 for kscd. and as earlier stated unmute card-- go thru which line goes to which cdrom/dvd and unmute both lines aux and cd i think.. as for nvidia driver read the readme file and boot into 3rd init level to run sh NVIDIA* as root and after changing to directory where file is located--as root in shell type "tel init 3" login as root and give password. if you do ctl-alt-F1 you will get warning that you are under active x server. worked for me two days ago. goodluck. with it. M10 program edits etc/x11 config. file too. you may want to check /etc/X11/Xconfig as per readme file. reboot maybe two times to get nvidia splash.

I got the sound. Evedently in Linux at least in Mandrake 10 the only way to play music cd's is if you have the audio cable installed from the back of your cdrom to your cdrom audio input on your sound card. All sound cards that I've seen in the past 6years have come with these. Even motherboards with onboard sound have the CD audio connector on the MB. CD's, after hooking up my audio cable from the cdrom to my soundcard sounds great. Evidently, I assumed that sound just did'nt work in my distro. But I got it. The sound system always worked. I just assumed that it did'nt until I hooked my cdrom audio wire. In a windows based machine you no longer need an audio cable from the cdrom to your sound card as the O.S. now reads the music on the cdrom digitally and accesses it through the IDE cable. Hope this helps others that may have the same problem. Some although few cdroms are no longer shipping with this audio cable and why should they? And by the way.. My pirated movies that I hacked in Windows work great in linux with Totem Media player. Just FYI. 5.1 in linux sounds way better than it ever did in windows... Go figure
