Hi there.

I am installing Fedora Core 3 on a Compaq Proliant 1850R server.

The problems I am coming across are as follows:

1: I can't run an installation using the GUI. It bombs the server out and so I have to use linux text to install.

2: I can run KDE for example, which works fine once and then will not work again. I have to end up reinstalling to get things working.

3: Whenever I press Caps Lock, Scroll Lock or Num Lock, no matter where I am (runlevel 3 even!!) it bombs the server out and I have to restart.


Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

I have even tried Fedora Core 2 and it does the same.

I had Windows Server 2003 installed on this box and it was running like a dream, so it doesn't look like faulty hardware, maybe just incorrect configuration or hardware issue with Fedora.

Any help anyone could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

A search of the net on several occasions as well as my experience with 2 Proliant 2500's, has taught me that older Compaq servers are persnickety in accepting Linux installations. I would say that you need to find the proper boot arguments to give to the kernel (running from a text mode install). Please post more info on your particular hardware, especially the mainboard architecture, i.e. scsi type, raid type, does this machine have EISA? I would also recommend burning the Slackware 10.1 disk set and posting back. I have found Slack's installaiton to be more 'old Compaq' friendly. Nice variation of 'boot flavors', but may require some command line gymnastics.
