Harddisk fragmentation


What are the disk tools available for linux?

As far as disk fragmentation goes, the file systems used by Linux are designed so that you do not need to defragment them. There are defreg tools out there but from what I understand what usualy hapens when you run them is you corrupt your file system so I wouldn't recomend using them unless you really have nothing important on your system.

Some filesystems in Linux needs to be defrag but there are no utilities to do this. You have to do a filesystem dump to another medium and then do another dump to the hard drive. This make sure there is continuous data on the hard drive. The filesystems that gets effected are JFS and XFS although XFS is more resistant to fragmentation than JFS.

The only disk tool for Linux is fsck but it only does checkups on the filesystem.

I was thinking of more like a defrag tool for my vfat drives.
