GSM module in Dell precision

Wondering if it's possible to use the gsm modem that's been sitting behind my battery forever.
Can't find it as a device. Has anyone any luck with using it?

Since you don't tell us what the laptop in question actually is, beyond saying "Dell precision", running what version/distro of Linux, or what you're looking at when you say you can't find it, what do you think we can tell you??? Read the "Question Guidelines"...provide details and we can try to help.

::EDIT:: Did you do any research? Putting "Dell Precision GSM Linux" into a search engine yields lots:

You need to be far more specific! About what hardware you've got, what OS you're running, what commands you entered, what the result of those where, what searches you've performed, etc.

To find what other people are using, put your exact hardware into linux-hardware.org and see if it's marked as detected/works for any of them.

Not invalidating what the previous posts say, but if you use NetworkManager, make sure to also have ModemManager installed, and see if the wizard (new mobile broadband connection or some such) recognizes it.

You need, of course, a suitable SIM card first.

Is there a reason you couldn't just post "I have a Dell Precision M4500 running Ubuntu 20.04", instead of all this?? And you were given a link in the first reply, to the Dell site, with instructions on how to identify the device, and how to use it. Did you read/understand/try those things??

No, it isn't.
Did you read what it says at the top?
Quote:
I am using the built in GSM (UMTS) modem of my Thinkpad X1 extensively because I am often in places with flaky internet connections. I connect through the standard Network Manager on Ubuntu and everything works fine. There was one major annoyance though. Every time I wanted to top up the SIM balance or book a new package, I needed a phone to send and receive USSD codes. So I took some time to figure out how to do it from the shell.
And you just want to connect, right?
So, probably best to undo what you did there, then re-read my previous post.
