I've got an Asus A6U laptop. There is a mic right above the screen. The problem is that it doesn't work and haven't got a clue of how to get it working. Where should I look for manufacturer, model and so on?
Not sure there myself. Have you tried using ' alsamixer ' command and see if it is seen and the level is up. Also check to make sure it is not muted.

Yup... Have turned up the mic volume. I am able to switch between two mics in alsamixer too (the built-in and the external one, though I have no idea which one is which; alsamixer enumerates them only as 1 and 2).
Though I can't see any other place where both of those mics are listed. KMix shows only one. KInfoCenter shows only two audio devices: the internal sound card (not the one with the built-in mic) and the modem...
Hmmm... or may be the built in mic has some connection to the on-board snd card? My card is SiS SI7012 with ALC650F... Anybody got a clue?
ALC650 is the snd-hda-intel driver, I think. In older ALSA versions this driver doesn't work with some microphones by default. First try updating ALSA. If this doesn't help, then you have to add some options when ALSA modprobes the module, which I don't remember exactly right now unfortunately (it was model=something AFAIR).
OK, now it's working.... it seems. I can tap on it or speak into it and I am able to hear sound coming from the loudspeakers (have no idea how I did that, but I just fiddled a little with alsamixer controls and all of a sudden it worked... great ). The problem is though that no recording program (have tried arecord, krec, etc) is able to capture the sound. What should I do?
